Root-Pike WIN Grant
supports area Land Trusts
Symposium held at Wingspread--March 1, 2008
On a cold
blustery day, Board and committee members of the Kenosha/Racine Land
Trust and the Caledonia Conservancy participated in a symposium on
multiple aspects of the challenges of land protection here in SE
Wisconsin.
Land conservation is a critical “green”
topic for our human, wildlife and economic sustainability and quality
of life. These two organizations continue to demonstrate their
engagement in successful land conservation by participating in
symposiums such as this one.
This symposium was made possible by a
grant from Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network, which is a
grassroots collaborative that awards grants and offers advisement to
organizations for projects that preserve, promote, and protect land
and water resources in the Root-Pike Watershed.
The Symposium was hosted by The Johnson
foundation at Wingspread. As participants and as organizations, we
appreciate the hospitality and the support for conservation.
Wingspread is a unique setting that clearly demonstrates the value of
the vision of sustainability.
Sara Wilson and Carol Mayes of
MAYES│WILSON &
ASSOCIATES, LLC, a local land
conservation and non-profit development consultancy, developed and led
the program covering topics from land protection mechanisms, to IRS
rules, stewardship, management and philosophy of land protection.
This symposium built on a previous grant
project for both organizations, awarded by the Land Trust Alliance in
preparation for national land trust accreditation.
